Sir William Burrell's Collection
The famous Burrell Collection is located just off Junction 24 of the M8 motorway, south of Glasgow. It is within the the country park of Pollok House, only a 40 minute drive from Kirkton House in Cardross.
Sir William Burrell [1861-1958] was a Glasgow shipping merchant and ship owner, with an eye for attractive things such as ceramics, statues, carpets, textiles, jewellery, paintings, and furniture. Burrell collected his treasures from all over the world.
Upon his death, he bequeathed the Burrell Collection to the people of Glasgow - with funds to provide for the construction of a purpose built building to house these artefacts, on the condition that entry to the collection should be free of charge to the people of Glasgow!
Burrell Collection at Pollok House
A modern building is now home to the collection, in rural surroundings within the grounds of Pollok House. Highland cattle wander around outside, and the blend of the modern style of the building with the varied ancient artefacts works well.
Only about a third of Sir William's collection is on view at any one time, and the items exhibited are rotated to ensure a spectacular array of items on view. Entry is 'free', but the canny Glaswegians have introduced a car parking charge!
Pollok House and Gardens are also worth a visit when at the Burrell Collection.
