Unique Boat Lift on The Forth Clyde Canal
When renovating the Forth Clyde Canal, the problem of replacing a whole series of conventional locks to rejoin the east to west coast canal system had to be cracked.
Using the basic theory that a boat displaces its own weight of water, a unique boat lift design was born using two counter-balancing containers for the canal boats. Eureka!
Such simplicity in the science was converted into a graceful piece of engineering, to produce the Falkirk Wheel, which is now a major tourist attraction.
It is possible to travel in a boat through the whole lift, out at the top through a tunnel, and back again.
